How to apply Maths in Marketing?

Towards the end of 2018, I decided to use Instagram’s new countdown feature and chose to do my New Year Countdown on the app instead of slotting my throat shouting 10,9,8,7 or more so 29th, 30th, 31st, Holiday… Ummm I mean Happy New Year!

As we entered 2019, the social countdowns began with Facebook coming a close second by letting you reshare your best memories of 2018 and Instagram again leading the game with UGC around people sharing their top memories creating error lines on stories instead of one or two single story! I decided that I will do a short countdown of mine as well listing top three Marketing ideas that I implemented (in my personal Marketing) in 2018 solely by using a bit of Mathematics. I could potentially write about the brand but that would need a consent from my team who came up with more brilliant ideas than I did, or maybe I helped them reach there- anyways coming back to being humble.

Here are my own Top 3 Marketing Ideas where I used a bit of Maths:

1. This was the year when I decided to pay the super affordable Rs. 500/year to register www.Jeevikatyagi.com. I added the ssl certification because why have an unsecured url when https is another cheap and valuable addition. Having your own website or registering your brand name is a must, no matter what is your profession. I might sound like a GoDaddy add but lets be honest, they do make some epic ads. Sabziwala (vegetable vendor) goes to register his account (future threat to Big Basket) and doubles his business! Long term, you never know what will be the future of your own brand or identity. Whether you have a goal or not, you would need a website to support both, your work and your workless ness. Cost of registering it for a year equals 4 happy meals at McDonalds or one pasta and a drink at Smokehouse Deli or 4 drinks at Starbucks in a year or even 4 pairs of socks (damn socks can be expensive and so is Starbucks, but we love Starbucks, right?).

2. My last business generated a lot of free PR and due to a crazy number of Insta tagging, hashtags and hacks the reach of my page was phenomenal. However, Instagram is one smart cookie. It changed its algorithm and and it started increasing your reach not based on followers but on engagement by each follower. Now that is simple math that brands use. More followers, more reach, bigger brand — Incorrect! Instagram insights help you understand in simplest form of analytics how they calculate engagement and reach. You could have 2000 followers or 20K followers, but if less than 10 percent engage with your post, neither are you showing on explore, nor your followers will rise at a rate they are suppose to.

3. The death and rise of Facebook was very strongly staged. Facebook understood that businesses are willing to invest in Ads and they have limited avenues. They also analysed that Businesses see direct results when they invest in Facebook Ads. For a lot of brands, Google CAC is higher than Facebook. A brand also has to diversify its portfolio to practically see where the ROI is higher. There is no formula to do this. One needs to continuously optimise to see the best results. While this knowledge tempted me to change my Facebook profile into a page, I realised I am still a step behind. I gave up posting on Facebook long before Instagram came into play. My Facebook profile is dedicated to re sharing when its almost necessary. So this past year, I decided to give my personal Facebook another chance. Who knows, it might be converted to a page soon.  Actually, I do! It won’t. Let us wait for me to get more active there, hence a higher reach, potentially more followers and then convert it into a page. You know the drill by now.

That’s it folks! Keeping it short this time. Really came back from a dead zone and motivated myself to write again. What I can promise is 2019 is that it will be full of surprises! Podcasts, Videos and more blogs, I am ruling out nothing.

Just one important thing that keeps me going and can help you too, Junk Food. No, that was incorrect. It is to do something different everyday besides your daily routine. That one new article, a blog, an initiative at work that you never took, a video you were too afraid to record or even the Netflix series that you thought was never your taste.  And there is no math behind this one.

Do write to me or comment below if you found this even one bit useful. I will reward myself a chocolate.
